Design data is created in Siemens NX. Approvals, changes, and bills of materials are managed through Teamcenter. And ultimately, everything is supposed to flow seamlessly into ERP and manufacturing. In theory, this is an end-to-end process\u2014in practice, it\u2019s often a patchwork of interfaces, duplicate data entry, and coordination loops that delay projects.<\/p>\n

CAD\/PLM integration promises to remedy this very issue: an end-to-end data chain from design to manufacturing. But what does that mean in concrete terms\u2014and what are the most common reasons integration projects fail in practice?<\/p>\n

What CAD\/PLM Integration Means in Practice
\n<\/strong>CAD\/PLM integration refers to the technical and procedural integration of design systems such as Siemens NX with the product lifecycle management system\u2014in many industrial companies, Teamcenter with Active Workspace as the user interface. The goal is a unified database: one part, one structure, one approval status\u2014regardless of whether a design engineer, a project manager, or production planning accesses it.<\/p>\n

In the system landscape, this means specifically that master data, change management, and approval workflows are not maintained in parallel in CAD and PLM, but are consistently synchronized between the systems\u2014and from there passed on to downstream systems such as ERP or MES.<\/p>\n

ERP<\/strong> (Enterprise Resource Planning) manages the company\u2019s business and logistics processes\u2014such as material requirements, procurement, and cost planning\u2014for example, in systems like SAP. MES<\/strong> (Manufacturing Execution System) controls and monitors the actual manufacturing process in real time\u2014from work plans to machine data.
